The Victorian Golf Association's Turf Research and Advisory Board has taken an attitude since it's inception to support and investigate turf subjects of a sustainable nature. Much of the work completed has also tended toward producing information that is beneficial to city, metropolitan and country clubs that in some circumstances have limited financial resources.

Sustainable Turf Trials
Turf species evaluation continues with a series of couch, zoysia and paspalum plots established at Metropolitan Golf Club that are being managed by the course superintendent and Turf Advisory Board member, Richard Forsyth. These trials are a combined effort of the Turf Advisory Board and the Victorian Golf Course Superintendents Association. Sustainability is the primary objective with this work, with particular reference to country areas.

At the present time at Metropolitan Golf Club these plots are not being fertilised, watered or cut. It is quite rare to be able to do relative assessments of turf varieties under these conditions where seed head formation, drought tolerance and general performance at very low fertility can be assessed. The rankings have changed significantly under these conditions and in many circumstances, this degree of stress becomes the determining factor.

At present the Metropolitan plots have altered again with the couch variety Conquest showing outstanding quality under the conditions imposed.
